Bedgebury British Blues

It was a worthwhile journey up to Carlisle with the January 2013-born Bedgebury Ironbrew. This Bringlee Carlos son is out of Justiciere Du P’tit Mayeur and is full sister to the 6800gns Bedgebury Glamorous. He stood first and reserve male champion in the pre-sale show before selling for 5000gns to P H Johnston and Sons, Falkirk.

Our two heifers did us proud at the Royal Welsh Show this year in strong competition. In the in calf or maiden heifer class we won the class with Differente Du Fond De Bois, a March 2013-born heifer bred and imported from Jean Pierre Montfort. She’s by Noceur De Fooz and out of Vodka Du Fond De Bois.

Standing third in the same class was Bedgebury Impressive, another March-born heifer, this time by Argan De L’Ecluse and out of the ET-bred Wilodge Cilla, herself a former breed champion at the Kent County Show.

The Bedgebury team celebrated a fantastic Kent County Show this month as we secured the breed championship and then later the reserve beef interbreed  championship with Du Fond De Bois, a March 2013-born heifer by Noceur De Fooz and out of Vodka Du Fond De Bois.

Also, a home bred daughter of our foundation cow, Wilodge Cilla, Bedgebury impressive won her class and took the reserve Blue championship. Due to her age she was also eligible for the junior interbreed championship where she took the interbreed championship. These two heifers were also part of the reserve interbreed group of four.

Both our heifer calves entered at the inaugural Blue Diamonds Sale at Kendal Livestock Market this month sold for 4000gns to Victoria Bowring for her Windmill herd, based at Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.

Bedgebury Icandy and Bedgebury Image are ET-bred sisters by Bringlee Carlos out of the Gitan daughter Justiciere Du P’Tit Mayeur and are ET sisters to the 6800gns Bedgebury Glamorous, sold in Carlisle May 2012 when she topped the female offering that day. No doubt these heifers will make a great addition to Victoria’s herd and we look forward to seeing them possibly on the show circuit next year.

Our only entry in the British Blue show and sale at Carlisle this moth sold for 7800gns in the form of Bedgebury General Lee. This ET-bred bull stood second in his class on Friday and is a Bringlee Waldo son out of one of our foundation females, the Wilodge Ulex daughter Wilodge Cover Girl, she was reserve champion at the Royal Welsh 2010.

He is maternal brother to the 15,000gns Bedgebury Flat Out, overall champion and top price at last year's May sale at Carlisle. Purchasing him was R A Cadzow, Berwick-upon-Tweed. We wish Mr Cadzow all the best with his purchase.

Leading the way for us in Chelford this month was the pedigree heifer Bedgebury Humbug, an ET-bred heifer by Dartagnan Du Castillon. She is out of the Dafydd D’Ochain daughter Ridge Dean Auntie who was originally purchased privately as a show heifer and then foundation female for the herd. Humbug was knocked down at 3600gns to Victoria Bowring.

A crossbred steer by Bluegrass Cyclone out of a former show heifer that was originally purchased as a calf from Chelford then topped the commercial show calf offering for the Bedgebury team at 1580 selling to Messrs Cross. We’d like to wish both buyers the very best with their purchases.

This month’s trip to Carlisle for the May Society Sale was definitely the best ever in terms of Bedgebury success. Taking the intermediate and overall championship under judge Phil Halhead of Norbreck Genetics was Bedgebury Flat Out, an ET-bred son of the successful show bull Ballygrange Alex out of Wilodge Cover Girl who stood female and reserve breed champion at the Royal show in 2009. He later sold for the top price of the day of 15,000gns in partnership to Jim Innes, Strathbogie and Neil Barclay, Harestone.

Later at the same sale we sold the second prize Bedgebury Glamorous for the top female price of the day of 6800gns to Messrs Tiplady. She is by Bringlee Carlos and is out of Justiciere Du P’Tit Mayeur, a Gitan daughter. We’d like to wish all our buyers the very best of luck with their purchases and look forward to hearing how they perform in the future.

Having taken the female and reserve overall championship at this month’s official Society show and sale at Chelford, Bedgebury Futie went on to sell for 4300gns, the day’s highest price for a female, to Iain MacInnes for his Ruaig herd on the Isle of Tiree. Iain purchased Futie on the phone and now plans to show her this summer. By the noted sire Bluegrass Cyclone, she is out of the Dafydd daughter and past show cow Ridge Dean Auntie.

At just 12 months old, Bedgebury Fancy Pants certainly lived up to her name at Edenbridge and Oxted Show at the end of August as she was placed first in a tough yearling heifer class and then went on to be female champion and reserve breed champion under judge Michelle Wilde. On the second day of judging she then went on to take the female interbreed title and overall interbreed champion under judge Harry Emslie. Mr Emslie said: “This heifer has great growth for age, bags of style and on the day, was an animal I would have happily taken home with me.” Fancy Pants is an ET-bred daughter of Ballygrange Alex out of Wilodge Cover Girl.

Also in the breed classes, our yearling heifer Bedgebury Futie, by Bluegrass Cyclone out of Ridge Dean Auntie stood second to Fancy Pants in the yearling heifer class while our yearling bull Bedgebury Flat Out ET who is a full brother to Fancy Pants won his class and then went on to be placed reserve male champion.

This is our last show of the season with the next stop being Carlisle where we will be offering Bedgebury Futie for sale and a number of embryos. For more information on those see our for sale page.

Although our team was incredibly young for this year’s royal Welsh, we were very pleased indeed with how they fared against some of the finest Blues in the UK.

Our August 2010-born yearling bull Bedgebury Flat Out ET stood third in a strong class of eight bulls. By Ballygrange Alex out of Wilodge Cover Girl, he is growing in to a great young bull with good locomotion and natural muscling. Our yearling heifer, the other baby of the team, Bedgebury Fancy Pants, who is full ET sister to Flat Out stood a very respectable fifth place in a class of 20 heifers, of which she was one of the youngest in the class.

All being well our next show outing will be Edenbridge and Oxted at the end of the month.

We were incredibly delighted with our success at last weeks East of England Show where we took top place tickets with all our stock in both the breed classes and the Continental classes on the last day of the show.

Kicking off proceedings in the breed classes for us was our senior cow Ridge Dean Auntie ET (by Dafydd D'Ochain out of Ridge Dean Victoria), she won the cow class and then went on to be reserve female champion under judge Graham Brindley of the Bringlee herd.

Our yearling bull Bedgebury Flat Out ET (by Ballygrange Alex out of Wilodge Cover Girl) stood second in his class and also reserve junior male champion, while in a tough yearling heifer class we stood at the top of the line with Bedgebury Futie (by Bluegrass Cyclone out of Ridge Dean Auntie ET) and second with Bedgebury Fancy Pants ET (by Ballygrange Alex out of Wilodge Cover Girl). Futie then went on to take the junior heifer championship followed by Fancy Pants who stood reserve junior heifer champion.

In the interbreed junior championship Limousin breeder William Smith of the Milbrook herd then tapped Futie out to be interbreed junior heifer champion, while on the last day fellow Blue breeder Andy Ryder placed Fancy Pants first in the the Continental yearling heifer class before placing her reserve overall Continental champion.

Our next show will be the Royal Welsh, we look forward to seeing you there.

Our first show of the season kicked off with great success as we stood first, female any other breed champion and reserve overall any other breed champion with the yearling heifer Bedgebury Futie, a daughter of Bluegrass Cyclone out of Ridge Dean Auntie. Futie then went on to be placed interbreed female champion as well as reserve overall interbreed.

In the class judging we also stood second with Bedgebury Fancy Pants, an ET-bred heifer by Ballygrange Alex out of Wilodge cover Girl, while her full ET brother Bedgebury Flat Out won his class and stood reserve male any other breed champion behind the show’s overall interbreed champion. Our next show will be the East of England Show.

Having been admired by many who have seen her, we were delighted to take our British blue x Limousin x heifer to Chelford this month where she was placed crossbred heifer champion and reserve overall champion under judge Louise Todd. By Bluegrass Clyclone, she is out of a Blue x Limousin cow that was bought as a calf at Chelford and had a great show career with us on the south east circuit. In the sale she attracted great interest and was finally knocked down at the day’s highest price of 2850 to Shifnal, Shropshire-based Christine Williams and Paul Tippetts, who plan to show her this summer before retaining her in their commercial herd.

Having made the long trip up to Borderway Mart, Carlisle with our first homebred bull Bedgebury Dizzy Rascal, a son of the great Wilodge Ulex out of Wilodge Uptown Girl, we were delighted to stand first in a very tough intermediate class. The next day we were more than happy to sell Dizzy for 10,000gns to commercial and pedigree breeders Messrs Teasdale, Co Durham. We would like to wish the Teasdale family the very best with Dizzy and look forward to seeing calves on the ground by him.

We took two pedigree heifers and a commercial show potential steer calf to this month’s official Society Sale at Chelford and are pleased to report all three animals sold incredibly well.

The highlight of the sale for us was selling our seven month old Limousin x British Blue x steer calf for 1600. By Burnbank Arnie he sold to W Smith, Leek, who will be showing him on the summer circuit this year. Of the heifers, our first sale was Bedgebury Davina, a March 2008, tall black and white heifer by Bringlee Volkawagon out of the herd’s first pedigree purchased Ridge Dean Auntie. She sold for 2250gns to J and S Wood, Livestock Exporters, Redditch. Our next was the May 2009 born heifer Bedgebury Echo. By Empire D’Ochain, she is out of Wold Newton Tabasco and sold for 1500gns to R Leedham, Desford. We would like to wish all three purchasers the very best with their animals.

This was our last show of the season and it’s safe to say we went out on a high as Wilodge cover Girl took the overall British Blue championship under judge Mike Dickens, Milton Keynes. Cover Girl took the female championship and then went on to take the breed championship. Our other entry at the show Bedgebury Dizzy Rascal stood second in his class and then went on to take the reserve male championship.

This year’s Royal Show was the highlight of my showing career to date. Under judge Rhys Jenkins, we won the two year old heifer class with Wilodge Cover Girl, daughter of Wilodge Ulex out of Wilodge Uptown. She then went on to take the female championship and reserve overall champion behind Danny Wyllie’s bull Ballygrange Alex.

In the same heifer class, Cover Girl’s full sister Wilodge Cilla stood fourth.
